ABOUT THE WTD  FOUNDERS

The Year:  1977

The Place:  The dining room in a modest home in Northwest Baltimore

Mr. Dorsey and Dr. Crawford were both well educated men from what is now termed "HBCUs".  Each personally knew the hardship of securing a college education.  Their thirst for knowledge and pursuit of an education beyond the secondary level came at a period in our history when it was difficult for Blacks to finish elementary or secondary school, let alone get a college education.  There was little money for the necessities of life, much less money for schooling.  None "HBCU" colleges and universities rarely allowed admission of Blacks.  If admittance occurred, matriculation and campus life was an unpleasant experience.

Mr.  Dorsey had the idea of establishing an educational fund to assist poor struggling students and Dr. Crawford - the business knowledge of how to make Mr. Dorsey's dream come true. In 1978, Mr. Dorsey made the first substantial donation as a base upon which to build the "FUND".  On August 30, 1978, the dream and the diligent dedicated work of these two gentlemen became a reality.  The State of Maryland duly registered and approved the "FUND" as a bona fide charitable corporation.  The "FUND" also was approved as  a 501c(3) charitable corporation according to federal statues.

Since that date, with the help of friends, family, fraternity(Phi Beta Sigma, Inc.) brothers, and other generous supporters, the "FUND", i.e. "The Dorsey Educational Fund, Inc." has donated substantial amounts to three traditional Black Colleges(now Universities) in the greater Baltimore environs:  Bowie, Coppin & Morgan.  The "FUND"  is in the process of underwriting perpetual funds (ENDOWMENTS) at each of the  universities.
